FlightNav GPS is an Android app designed for people who want to know where they are while flying, especially on flights without seatback screens or in-flight entertainment.
The idea comes from a very common situation: you are on a plane, looking out of the window, and you wonder what is below you. A city, a coastline, a mountain range, a lake, the route you are following. Regular apps are often not designed for this context, while aviation solutions are usually more oriented toward pilots than passengers.
FlightNav GPS tries to bring these two worlds together: a clear and readable map for the curious passenger, but with tools and data solid enough to be useful even for people who truly know aviation.
What It Offers
The app shows the aircraft position in real time on a live map, with different visual themes including light, dark and satellite modes. It also works in airplane mode, because GPS does not require a cellular network to determine position.
During the flight, FlightNav GPS shows data such as ground speed, GPS altitude, track, vertical speed, signal accuracy, flight duration, distance flown, maximum altitude and maximum speed. In practice, it is a personal moving map to keep in your hand when the seat in front of you offers nothing.
The map can automatically follow the aircraft and keep it centered, or it can be moved freely. North-Up and Track-Up views are available, so the user can choose between a classic map view or a perspective closer to navigation.
Routes and Navigation
FlightNav GPS allows users to set a departure and arrival route using ICAO codes or city names. The app calculates route distance and updates remaining distance and ETA to destination in real time.
It also includes features closer to aviation navigation, such as Direct-To, waypoints placed on the map, distance rings at 10, 25 and 50 nautical miles, route line and an aeronautical overlay with airspaces and useful references.
These features make the app interesting not only for passengers who want to know “where are we?”, but also for private pilots or aviation enthusiasts looking for a lightweight, immediate and GPS-focused tool.
Flight Recording and Logbook
One of the most important parts is flight recording. The app can start and stop logging automatically by detecting takeoff and landing, or users can start it manually.
Each recorded flight is saved in the history, turning FlightNav GPS into a small digital logbook. After landing, the user can review a summary with duration, distance, maximum speed, maximum altitude and the recorded track.
Saved flights can be replayed directly on the map, with playback speed control. Tracks can also be exported as GPX or KML, or as a flight chart showing altitude, speed and vertical speed trends.
On-Board Tools
FlightNav GPS includes a tools section with more detailed data: GNSS status, visible and used satellites, fix information, signal strength and satellite constellation details.
It also includes a real-time G-meter, based on the device sensors, showing G-load and tracking minimum and maximum values. It is a curious feature for passengers and useful for giving a number to sensations such as turbulence, turns or stronger variations.
The app also includes a home screen widget, with quick information about speed, altitude and flight duration during recording.
Offline Use and Privacy
FlightNav GPS is designed to work well in real flight conditions, where connectivity is often unavailable. GPS keeps working without internet, and the app also supports importing offline maps, so geographic context can remain available even without mobile data.
Flight logs remain stored locally on the device. Online functions are used only when needed, for example to search for a location or display map content that is not available offline.
It is important to clarify that FlightNav GPS is not certified for operational air navigation. It is a support, information and personal tracking app: useful and accurate within its scope, but not a replacement for certified aviation instruments and procedures.
Why I Built It
I built FlightNav GPS because I have often flown without any information on screen: no map, no position, no route indication. Just the window and the curiosity to understand what was below.
In this project I combined two perspectives: that of the curious passenger and that of the pilot. As a commercial helicopter pilot with an IFR rating, I know the value of essential flight data, but I wanted to bring it into a simple, accessible app also designed for people who are not familiar with aviation instruments.
The most interesting part was turning the phone into a small on-board deck: map, GPS, route, instruments, recording, replay, export and flight history. An app born from a simple question: “where are we now?”, but grown into a real travel companion.
